Frida Carlo's Exhibition in Mexico City
Frida Carlo is still recovering from a failed transplant, in which a slice of her pelvic bone was grafted onto her spine with a metal plate. It's pioneering surgery, but her body rejects it and by the opening day of the show, her condition has deteriorated so much that her doctors forbid her to leave her bed. She defined who she was in her own terms, the same way she did as an artist. So really, I'm usually very against of just putting her as a victim because everything around the workI do, around Frida is precisely to celebrate her as a woman who didn't allow her disabilities to define her.
