The Importance of Constituencies in Ireland
The electoral commission has been told to stick within constituencies of three, four, or five seats. In the past, in the earlier decades of the state, there were much larger constituencies of several seats. So why does the current act favor the smaller number? It's hard to know. Perhaps it benefits the larger parties to have smaller constituencies. These are the larger parties who would have passed this legislation.
