The Evolution of the Mammalian Neocortex

Salamander neurons didn't match anything in the mammalian neocortex. The reptile DVR was therefore a mix of inherited and novel types of neurons. Toscazenter team proposed that essentially all of the mammal neocortex is an evolutionary innovation. They aren't the first researchers to propose that origin for the cells, but they are the first to produce evidence for it.
