It was a lot of trial and error. I would get in the studio with whoever wrote the biggest hit of the day because everyone was always chasing that. And you'd be like, well, this doesn't fit me at all, but let's try it out. You don't start rapping. I'm starting rapping. That's why you just have to be strong. So I was learning how to be strong by being weak first, which is my favorite thing to do. The tide started to turn for him as a songwriter when he saw his music shift from R&B to pop soul.
