There's a spectrum of belief about or thought about what exactly academic freedom is. And it has to be enshrined in the character of the university, but circumscribed by truth and the common good. At the heart of the Lando Lakes debacle was a settled conviction that one cannot be faithfully Catholic and really academically excellent. You can't be truly free if you're also under the truth.
