Photography and Film Are Not Competitors With Paintings

Philosopher stanley cavell argues that photography and film were never actually competitors with painting. For him, the relations between subject and object are totally different in these media. And so he says that movies arise out of magic by permitting us to view the world unseen. But i'm not sure how i feel about this idea that in film, and partially in photography, we let the world unfold unimpeded.
