The Dilemma Between Nomotetic and Ideographic Models
Mernay: Is it possible to explain differences within people in a way that we can make sense of and predicting an individual's behavior with useful accuracy as opposed to between people? Mernay: For accurate predictions within individuals we need very ideographic models but that doesn't necessarily help with understanding individual differences. In many ways the personality trait research that focuses on differences between people and state research that focuses more and within individual variability they can just happily coexist and have different priorities.
