Commercial airplanes have points around the aircraft where ground crew can plug in directly and call the cockpit. Air traffic controllers saw black smoke coming from somewhere on the apron, but couldn't see exactly where it was out of their direct line of sight. "I just didn't know there's a phone outside the plane," he says.
