The Dilemma of Violence and Peace in the Empire
Emperor Constantine said, at a battle of Muvan Bridge, I see the light now. I want to be a Christian. He saw a cross burning in the sky or something, is that right? That's right. And either he did his political calculation and decided, better switch. So it is a kind of proto-just war theory type thing. Everything changed when the emperor became Christian. Augustine's city of God and city of man was his attempt to rehabilitate the book of Revelation for an era where he wanted Christians to live peacefully. The story tells us that violence can be acceptable if it is in the pursuit of justice.
