The Confederacy and the Sea Raiders

Britain and France were pretty much the only world powers at the time. They both resented the united states, especially in social circles. The elite was very pro confederate, yet their credit a went to the working classes. I don't get why it should surprise anybody that a a great writer has objectionable opinions or is a bad person.
