On average, the vast majority of people who go to war and fighting wars don't benefit from them. France in the First World War lost 30% of its men between the ages of 16 and 35. If we projected it to today's population sizes of the US would would be a 5 million person loss during the Civil War. We're driven by these subconscious and very strong emotions towards status which is really vitally important in an evolutionary sense towards belonging.
