The Alhambra Decree was issued on March 31st, 1492. The Jewish population estimated that approximately 300,000 were told to either leave or convert immediately. Ferdinand and Isabella unleashed their armies and crushed the rebellion in 1501 but now they had caused the turn against their Muslim subjects. In time, the Muslims also began to live as second-class citizens and would be subjected to severe taxes. Once again, many left, and those that remained who took up the cross were looked upon with extreme suspicion.
