The film is based on the real-life case of Alice Orquist. She was found dead in her home after being gaslighted by a police officer. Scott Langard, played by Joseph Cotton, decides to help Paula find out what happened. He gradually manipulates Paula into thinking she's losing her mind and all kinds of things.
