Self-harming is sadly really common in teens. Sometimes it's cutting, sometimes it's burning and sometimes it's hitting or banging their head. The research does not support the idea that if you talk about self-harm you are encouraging it. When somebody self-harms they actually feel this sense of calm come over them. That's because pain triggers what we know is the parasympathetic nervous system. And those two things need to be imbalanced.
