Arjuna's emotions were in a state of rebellion. He was repulsed by the idea that he had to fight against and kill his own family members. The inner battle, this battlefield metaphor is a symbol at several levels. Arjuna intellectually knew clearly that it was a war that must be fought to restore Dharma. And before the battle even began, Arjuna was knocked out of commission, as they say.
