The Different Levels of Membership in the LME
The LME is not totally dissimilar to other futures markets but in part because of the complexity of this date system. A lot of people are trading with a broker which could be a large bank or it could be a specialist broker whatever it might be and instead of actually having their trades put through onto the LME, they're trading an over-the-counter contract that just looks like an LME contract. This creates a whole new set of exposures for the brokers and also makes it harder for the exchange and the regulators particularly the exchange to see exactly who has what position.
