The Republican party has had very negative ratings in recent years, and it's mostly because self-identified Republicans don't like their own party. The extent to which partisanship is tied up with identity is something that political scientists debate a lot these days. On the one hand, we have seen this increase in partisanship as a source of identity; on the other hand, people register with parties less than ever. And so how do you square people's incredible partisan loyalty with their incredible disdain for the parties? I have a theory about this.
