I do think most of it is based on the ideas and principles that are enshrined in the founding of the country. But I think there's a cultural component to it too. Free speech and open debate as our mechanism to settle questions rather than aristocracy and force. The idea of unbridled meritocracy, that you get ahead in this country not in the color of your skin, but in the content of your character and contributions.
