The State, a New History of Humanity
The state is a recurring topic for the archaeologists and historians working on all these differ places. Different eras and regions have many different ways of talking about and analyzing the state. There's some really good recent work that asks a lot of provocative questions about the state's place in human history. i much prefer the latter approach because it's grounded in our material rather than idealized approaches to what a state should be.
