How Habits Form

In the 1990s, researchers at MIT started looking into how habits were formed. And of course, humans are too hard to study so they started with rats. The process in which the brain converts a pretty wild sequence of actions into an automatic routine is called chunking. Think about it like backing the car out of your driveway. Pretty simple thing to do, basic. But if you think back to the first time you really had a crack at it, it's a pretty wild thing to do.
