Charles Williams and the Order of the Golden Dawn
Charles Williams was a member of the Order of the Golden Dawn, an occult society founded in 1888 by former Masons. He may have been struggling himself with whether this was 100% reconcilable with his Christian faith. Eliot's famous phrase that Christ is the still point in the interning world, he said he got from Williams and I had something to do with Tarot. That seems to be the case in the last novel, All Hallows Eve,. That's the novel in which magic seems to be completely repudiated in the Sorcerer is the bad guy.
