There's a psychological intimidation question that the best units in warfare are always possessed. The Vikings certainly had that but otherwise if you were to get an artist rendering of a Viking a well-equipped Viking warrior and put it next to an artist rendering, they're pretty interchangeable aren't they? When troops are armed and equipped similarly when they fight in similar formations when the tactics are similar the things that are left over increase in importance right so in my mind the first stringers from both a viking army and most of the enemies in the west aViking army would face cancel each other out.
