The Russian Military in Ukraine and Syria
The Russian military is undergoing a major modernization project. The army that went into Georgia in 2008 was still very recognizably Soviet, smaller than the Red Army. Most divisions were actually just simply abolished and replaced by brigade-sized tactical groups. Putin's focus has been reoriented away from big wars to small-scale intervention operations.
