Simon predicts golden age is not just for AI but for nuclear and space travel to boot. The 1950s were a period of great optimism for a number of reasons, including the end of world war IE in the beginning of the Cold War. Looking back, it seems absurd that anyone alive in 1957 could have believed that within a visible future machines would be able to handle a range of problems co extensive with the human mind. That's why peaks and inflated expectations are all alike.
