The cotton embargo of 1861 had an immediate impact on the Lancashire industry. The North West is very reliant on one region's cotton crop, and this makes them vulnerable. Cotton manufacturers have been stockpiling cotton anyway as they are aware of their vulnerability. But when the next year's harvest fails to come through that's when the problems really start to emerge.
