Is There a Flood Narrative in Ancient Near Eastern Cultures?
Other ancient arisian cultures did also have flood narratives. Could the biblical author have been correcting pagan ideas about the great flood by writing what he did? Yeas. And as will see under the reason perspective, some of the ancient near eastern flood stories attributed the flood to things other than human sin. By contrast, the author of genesis would be showing that god only sent up the flood because of human sin and that he preserved the righteous to build a better world. The author would thus be intending us to learn theological truths about god, rather than historical lessons in Genesis one.
