What People Get Wrong About Walden

The Art of Manliness

CHAPTER

Thoreau and Walden Pond

When did Thoreau decide to leave Walden Pond? Well he left on September 6, 1847. And he left for actually a very mundane reason. Emerson was going away on a lecture tour to Europe and Mrs. Emerson Lydian wanted somebody to take care of her and the house children while Emerson was gone. So how long did he stay at Walden? He was there for two years, two months, two days. But this interesting thing and it's not in any biography ever. People sort of almost conflate the name Thoreau and the name Walden together.
