Ruth Handler became president of Mattel the year before she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had to have her entire breast, some muscle tissue and some lymph nodes removed a partial radical mastectomy. Her breasts were all scarred up from all the surgery she had removing these tumors. After her cancer operation, she went to get fitted for a breast prosthetic but it didn't feel right. And she decided it had been designed by men who never had to wear it. So she set out using the engineers that she knew to create a better breast prosthetic.
