You can't label somebody a heretic unless they've been presented with the teaching that they're doing is wrong. And because of our human frailty, sometimes we're just going to articulate that revelation wrong. The question is, when presented with the truth, do we go, okay, you know, I submit to that, that makes sense? That would be the difference between a theologian who is really trying to articulate the truth of the faith in a new manner and the quote unquote heretic who knows what the church teaches but doesn't believe it.
