The Rise of Statistics in India
Statistics was not considered a scientific discipline until well into the 1930s and maybe even 1940s in India. By 1946 when the Indian Science Congress has its annual meeting the person sharing that entire conference is Mahalenobis because of his work as a statistician. Nehru's handwritten notes from the 1930s onwards this bemoaning the lack of adequate statistics in India at the same time India makes globally pioneering contributions to sample serving.
Society cannot be designed in a top-down way. Central planning was a historic blunder that harmed India -- even though it was conceived by great men with good intentions.
