Authenticity, as the French Existentialists Conceive It, Is the Opposite of Narsicism
Some criticise the idea of authenticity on the basis that it involves some kind of excessive mou no self importance or self indulgence. I think that criticism absolutely can't apply to sartre and de beauvois, because one of the things that their conception of authenticity er stressed was that we shouldn't actually think of ourselves in terms of being at all. We're tempted always to raify the idea of a self and to use it to restrict our freedom, rather than to expand it. In a way, i would argue that, as sartran deBeauvois conceive it, authenticity is the opposite of narsicism.
