The Black Jersey of a Prisoner
In 1883, Bertha Pickpocket was convicted of stealing $225 from a man named Edward Sanders. The New York Sun had to say that the prisoner came into court wearing a black silk dress and a cartwheel hat smothered in feathers. She is black eyed and black haired, something like 40 years old, very stout and not good looking.Edward Sanders, the complainant, is a small nervous man with gray beard and thin hair. He has lost a leg but testified yesterday that he was formerly a teacher of Greek, Latin, Hebrew, German, and French.
