The Incubation Period of Smallpox Viruses
The smallpox virus likely jumped into humans from some type of rodent. It's mostly closely related to a rodent pox virus. This likely happened around the time of the agricultural revolution about 10,000 years ago. The one good thing is that it does not tend to be infectious until you start showing symptoms.
