The Vandals had never been Roman federal troops. They only knew conflict with the Empire. Their understanding of how to deal with the Romans was to use force. Once they took control of Africa, they destroyed the walls of all the cities they had taken and gobbled up fine estates for themselves. In 484, Hunerrik issued a decree against the Catholic heresy of the Roman people. It was time for the Catholics to feel some persecution. The persecutions were no Spanish Inquisition though, and Hunerrik died shortly afterwards,. leaving his successor, Gunthermand, to quietly ignore the issue.
