Locke believed that it was only in so far as you recognize the threat of punishment in an afterlife that you had sufficient reason to act. He thought that you might do anything you felt like if you didn't believe in God and that you might be quite reasonable in so doing. The most important interest that any human being has is in discharging the duties that God assigns to them, he says.
