The Choose Your Own Adventure series would become the most popular children's series during the 1980s and 1990s, selling more than 250 million copies between 1979 and 1998. Edward structured the potential plotlines and story endings in much the same way that we choose our way forward in life. In each of Edward's adventures there's always at least one highly desired resolution involving the discovery of a handsome monetary reward of some sort.
