Theodore "Ted" Kaczynski, better known as the Unabomber, is a US domestic terrorist who is currently serving 8 consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole for a series of mail and transportation bombings he committed between 1978 and 1995. On this episode, we read his essay "Industrial Society and Its Future", regarded as a seminal text in the anarchoprimitivist tradition. Kaczynski condemns modern society for being fundamentally dehumanising and he advocates for the complete destruction of the technoeconomic system that is enslaving millions of humans and destroying the environment. Kaczynski famously forced the text's publication in the Washington Post in return for discontinuing his bombing campaign. In court, Kaczynski refused to enter into an insanity defence, basing his defence on his anti-technology views, and eventually negotiated a guilty plea bargain. To this day Kaczynski maintains that he was and is not insane.
Ted Kaczynski studied mathematics at Harvard at 16, completed his award winning doctoral thesis on complex analysis at UMich, and went on to the tenure track at UC Berkeley at just 25 years of age. During his studies at Harvard, Kaczynski was a subject of brutal and inhumane experiments conducted by infamous psychologist Henry Murray in what some suspect to be experiments associated with the CIA's Project MK Ultra. Kaczynski dropped out of his prestigious mathematics professorial career to become a hermit in the Montana wilderness with the goal of becoming self-sufficient.
