Angela robinson is a research mathematician at the national institute of standards and technology. She's been fascinated with privacy and inscription ever since she was young, when she used to incrypt her diaries. Inscription worked like this, i lock my message in a box with a key. Send you that locked box, and you open it up with a copy of the same key. That's called symmetric cryptography. Senders and recipients have the same keys. And it turns out, in the digital age, that's a pretty bad idea.
