The Cost of Blood Cultures Negatively Affect Inpatient Care
The cost of the blood culture itself is not insignificant. It's somewhere between eight and $11,000 for each contaminated blood culture. And that does not necessarily account for the increased length of stay. If you get a blood culture and then you increase the antibiotics, there are harms to that too. You increase the antibiotic resistance and increase the risk of C-diff and C-diff not such a kind gift.
