The History of Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics

In 1798, Napoleon's troops entered Egypt and one of his commanders discovered a stone that had originated from an ancient Egyptian monument. The inscriptions upon it were highly unusual because it was engraved with a similar text in three different types of writing. For the next two decades, scholars poured over this fascinating antiquity, trying to match one piece of writing to another. In 1822, French man Jean-Francois Champs announced that he had decoded the script.
