In trying to understand how sustained economic growth happened and happens, there are many different people that put different hypotheses on the table. Geography is just one of them; it's not something like culture or institutions which have their own causes because we can say they're all related. There are other geographic arguments, so things like climate, whether that be temperature or really disease climate has been a big one for trying to explain sub-Saharan Africa’s backwardness.
