In 2008 Gaddafi flies in 200 bemused Kenyan tribal leaders to Tripoli, most of them quite elderly. They're ferried around on a sightseeing tour before being put up in a five-star hotel at Brother Leader's expense. He would preside over their conversion to Islam. That he has an impact in parts of the continent is beyond question. In return for his support for the African National Congress in its struggle against apartheid, Nelson Mandela will back Gaddafi to the very end.
