In 1981 the British government tried to remove political status from IRA prisoners. By the time a negotiation was reached, ten of them had died. The people of Northern Ireland were just completely approaching despair. You had appalling incidents including Bloody Friday when the IRA planted a lot of bombs in the shopping streets of Belfast and discriminately killing civilians.
