Darwin's the Birth of Tragedy
In 1872 he published his first major work, The Birth of Tragedy. That received a generally very lukewarm reception. One eminent scholar really wrote a ferocious critique of it. And at that point the possibility of going onward and upward as a philologist was pretty much close to him. He became increasingly disenchanted with academic philology. So he took the chance to retire in 1870, 1869. And then became in effect an independent scholar.
