There's this expectation as kids get older that they're going to be more capable of weathering disappointments. We run into something called the expectation gap where we are expecting just because a child is of a certain chronological age that they should have that ability to self-regulate their emotions around transition, for example. So no shame, no blame to parents. I'm all about giving ourselves so much compassion and so much leeway. And if that child actually has had their physiology shift from feeling okay and calm to feeling agitated, you will also see endocrine hormone surging.
