This effect is called the halo effect and it's important to understand for a few groups of people. If you're hiring an individual because they're talented in an unrelated area, but you believe that they have such a capacity in that area than certainly they have a capacity in another area, then you may be surprised by them. The average developer needs to pay close attention to this asymmetry of skill sets.
