There's only one general election in my memory where education has been one of the top agendas. Michael Gove talked about giving power away and told head teachers that they would have autonomy - yet here we are 10 years later with schools telling us they get less autonomy than they ever believe. And nearly every academy does the national curriculum, which was the top thing Gove said they could escape from. You talk one game and play another and politicians have centralized the agenda to such an extent now that they only really engage with a very small proportion of the whole population concerned with teaching. I think it actually is by accident in a sense. They set off with markets and didn't really understand that the failure
