Rockmaninoff's Fast Waltz
First violins play what seems like a new theme as well, but which is really a cleverly disguised version of the opening theme of the first movement. The next variations serve to highlight this kinship between the opening theme and the theme of the second movement. Rockmaninoff makes the connection even more explicit later on in the movement, as he once again surprises by transforming the music into a fast waltz.
