The ruins bingham had discovered were the remains of a royal estate of the kings of a people known as the inca. It had lain completely abandoned for nearly four centuries on top of the craggy peaks of the urubamba valley. To day it is one of the most recognizable and distinctive ruined places in the world, and it is known as machu pechu.
