California passed a law that allows children 12 and over to consent to treatment for sexually transmitted illnesses and infections. That includes vaccinations like the hepatitis B vaccine which arguably includes HPV vaccines. A 12 year old doesn't know their full medical history probably don't even know if they have peanut allergy or penicillin allergic but rely on parents to tell them about it. There are so many different layers of potential risk in allowing children to access healthcare decisions like that especially at an age like 12, says Dr. Aaron Carroll.
